Wildfire Smoke & Indoor Air Quality in Missoula Homes

The sky turns a dull orange. The mountains disappear. You close every window in the house, tell yourself you’re safe, and go about your day. It’s a familiar summer ritual for anyone who’s lived in Missoula long enough. Closing the windows is only the beginning of the story, and for most homes, it’s not nearly enough.

We’ve been working on heating and cooling systems in Western Montana homes since 1976, and wildfire smoke is one of the indoor air quality problems we see most consistently misunderstood. The particles that make smoke dangerous are so small that most homes let them in continuously, even with every door and window shut tight. Knowing what’s actually happening inside your home during a smoke event and taking the right steps before one arrives makes a meaningful difference.

Why Missoula Homes Are Especially Vulnerable to Wildfire Smoke

Missoula sits at the convergence of five mountain ranges in western Montana, known as the “hub of five valleys.” That bowl-shaped topography (the same geography that traps winter inversion pollution near ground level) does the same thing with wildfire smoke. When smoke settles into the valley, it has nowhere to go. Concentrations build and stay.

The fires feeding that smoke don’t have to be nearby. Smoke can travel hundreds of miles and still deliver unhealthy air to the Missoula area. And the season runs longer than most homeowners plan for. According to Missoula Public Health, smoke events can extend into late September and early October, well past the point when people have mentally moved on from summer fire season.

The particle at the center of all of this is PM2.5, fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. At that size, particles bypass the nose and throat entirely, travel deep into the lungs, and can enter the bloodstream. A closed window can’t filter PM2.5. It can only slow infiltration slightly. The real work requires more.

How Smoke Gets Inside Even When Everything Is Closed

A home that looks sealed isn’t. Smoke finds its way in through gaps around window frames, door sweeps that don’t quite make contact, electrical outlets on exterior walls, and wherever plumbing or wiring penetrates the building envelope. These openings are small, but PM2.5 particles are smaller, and the pressure difference between inside and outside drives a continuous exchange of air through all of them.

HVAC systems add another pathway. Any system with a fresh-air intake is actively drawing outdoor air inside. Without adequate filtration, or without the system configured to recirculate indoor air during a smoke event, it can distribute smoky outdoor air to every room in the house.

Kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans make the problem worse faster than most people realize. When those fans run, they depressurize the home, pulling replacement air in through every available gap. During a heavy smoke event, running an exhaust fan for twenty minutes can meaningfully degrade indoor air quality even in a house with all windows closed.

Before Smoke Arrives: Preparing Your Home & HVAC System

The most effective window for preparation is before smoke season begins, not during an active event. Montana DPHHS recommends upgrading HVAC filters to MERV-13 or higher as a core preparedness step. A MERV-13 filter captures the fine particulate matter wildfire smoke carries, but not every system can handle the added airflow resistance a denser filter creates. Running a filter your equipment isn’t sized for can strain the blower motor and reduce efficiency. A technician assessment before you upgrade is the right first step.

The building envelope deserves attention before smoke season too. Weatherstripping around exterior doors, foam gaskets behind outlet cover plates on exterior walls, and caulk around plumbing and wiring penetrations all reduce infiltration. These are straightforward fixes on a clear day. They’re harder to prioritize once the valley fills with smoke.

For homeowners who want consistent protection through the entire season, whole-home air purification systems installed within existing HVAC ductwork offer a different level of coverage than portable room units. Every cubic foot of air that circulates through the system gets treated. A portable unit cleans the air in the room where it sits, and only that room.

What to Do During an Active Smoke Event

HVAC fan settings matter more during smoke events than most homeowners know. Most thermostats default the fan to “auto,” which means the blower only runs when heating or cooling is actively cycling. Switching the fan to “on” keeps air moving through the filter continuously, even between cycles. If your system has a recirculate mode, engaging it stops the system from drawing in outdoor air at all, running only indoor air through the filter loop.

Limit exhaust fan use during peak smoke conditions. When outdoor AQI is at unhealthy levels, running a bathroom fan through a long shower or a range hood while cooking creates the negative pressure effect described above. Brief use is hard to avoid entirely, but minimizing it helps.

It’s also worth paying attention to what you’re adding to the indoor air. Candles, incense, a gas range running on high, and wood-burning fireplaces all contribute to PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds indoors. During a smoke event, when you’re already managing indoor air quality, those sources compound the load on your filters and your lungs.

Monitoring Missoula Air Quality So You Know When to Act

Knowing what the air is doing outside is essential for making good decisions inside. These are the monitoring tools we recommend Missoula homeowners keep bookmarked:

  • Missoula Public Health wildfire smoke advisories are issued during active smoke events each summer. Residents can sign up for email alerts by contacting airquality@missoulacounty.us, which puts advance notice directly in your inbox.
  • Montana DEQ’s Today’s Air website pulls data from Missoula-specific monitoring stations and displays real-time Air Quality Index readings. AQI is a standardized 0–500 scale that translates PM2.5 concentrations into plain-language health guidance.
  • fire.airnow.gov overlays satellite-tracked smoke plumes with ground-level PM2.5 readings, giving you a regional picture of where smoke is moving and how concentrated it is.
  • MontanaWildfireSmoke.org, which grew from Climate Smart Missoula, includes a live Missoula AQI widget and guidance on certified HEPA air cleaners for supplemental room-level filtration.

As a quick reference on AQI thresholds: Orange (101–150) means sensitive groups (children, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions) should limit outdoor exposure. Red (151–200) means everyone should reduce outdoor activity and prioritize keeping indoor air clean. When the valley hits Red, your HVAC configuration and filtration quality aren’t background concerns anymore. They’re immediate ones.

After the Smoke Clears: What Still Needs Attention

When the sky brightens and the mountains come back into view, it’s tempting to throw open the windows and call it done. Wait for the AQI to return to Good before airing out the house. Smoke conditions can shift rapidly in the Missoula Valley, and opening up too soon reintroduces outdoor particles before concentrations have actually dropped.

Inside the home, the work isn’t finished when outdoor air improves. PM2.5 particles that infiltrated during a prolonged event have settled into carpets, upholstered furniture, bedding, and ductwork. Smoke residue continues to off-gas volatile organic compounds, the chemical compounds that carry smoke’s characteristic odor and contribute to ongoing air quality problems, for days or weeks after outdoor conditions improve. Replacing HVAC filters after a heavy smoke event is a straightforward step: filters that have captured significant smoke load aren’t performing at rated efficiency, regardless of when they were last changed. After a significant nearby wildfire, professional indoor air quality testing can help determine whether PM2.5, VOCs, or residual contaminants have reached levels that warrant additional remediation. Visible improvement outdoors doesn’t always mean indoor concentrations have returned to safe levels.

Preparation Always Beats Reaction

Every step covered here is more effective when taken before smoke fills the valley than after. A filter upgrade installed in June does real work in August. Weatherstripping applied before fire season starts doesn’t require a frantic home improvement run while the AQI climbs. A whole-home purification system installed in the off-season is ready when the first smoke plume arrives.
